"Understanding the Role of Ovarian Cysts in the Menstrual Cycle: What You Need to Know"

by Cynthia Lombard, WHNP-BC

Relax! Ovarian Cysts Are Usually A Normal Process Of the Menstrual Cycle

Ovarian cysts can be normal and are often a regular part of the menstrual cycle.

Here’s why:

  1. Functional Cysts: These are the most common type of ovarian cysts and are related to the normal function of the ovaries. There are two main types:

  • Follicular cysts: These form when the follicle, a small sac that contains an egg, doesn’t release the egg and continues to grow.

  • Corpus luteum cysts: After the follicle releases the egg, it transforms into the corpus luteum, which produces hormones to support pregnancy. If the corpus luteum fills with fluid, it can form a cyst.

  1. Ovulation: During the menstrual cycle, the ovaries produce eggs in follicles. When an egg is released during ovulation, it can sometimes cause the follicle to swell and form a cyst. This is a normal process and usually resolves on its own.

  2. Hormonal Changes: Hormonal fluctuations during the menstrual cycle can lead to the formation of cysts. These cysts typically disappear within a few menstrual cycles without causing harm.

  3. Asymptomatic Nature: Many ovarian cysts do not cause symptoms and are often discovered incidentally during routine pelvic exams or imaging studies for other reasons. These cysts are usually benign and self-resolving.

  4. Reproductive Age: Ovarian cysts are common in women of reproductive age due to regular hormonal cycles. The presence of cysts in this age group is typically not a cause for concern unless they cause symptoms or complications.

  5. Temporary Nature: Most ovarian cysts are temporary and will resolve without treatment. They often disappear within a few weeks to a few months.

While most ovarian cysts are normal and harmless, some can cause symptoms or complications.

It's important to monitor any unusual symptoms, such as pelvic pain, bloating, or changes in menstrual cycles, and seek medical advice if necessary. Regular check-ups with a healthcare provider can help ensure that any cysts are properly evaluated and managed.

My initial reason for consulting Dr. Colle was for hair loss. I was also having stomach/digestive problems and I was getting sick on a regular basis needing antibiotics regularly. The care that Dr. Colle gave me improved my primary complaints as well as my overall health. As long as I take the current supplements recommend by Dr. Colle, my hair is no longer falling out. Following Dr. Colle's health recommendations has eliminated my stomach and digestive issues and I have not gotten sick or needed antibiotics. I would recommend Dr. Colle to others.
