If you're an Ocala man considering Testosterone Replacement Therapy (TRT), you've likely heard some concerning things about its potential risks. One of the most persistent fears is that TRT can cause or worsen prostate cancer. At Essential Woman LLC, with Cindy Lombard's expertise, we believe in empowering our patients with accurate information so they can make informed decisions about their health. Let's address some common misconceptions about TRT and prostate cancer, providing you with the facts you need to separate myth from reality.

Myth #1: TRT Causes Prostate Cancer

  • The Reality: This is the most pervasive and often the most fear-inducing myth. The truth is, the relationship between testosterone and prostate cancer is more complex and nuanced than often portrayed.

What the Research Actually Shows:

  • No Direct Causal Link: Extensive research has not established a direct causal link between TRT and the development of prostate cancer. In other words, there's no evidence that TRT causes prostate cancer to develop in men who didn't already have it.

  • Saturation Model: Some researchers propose a "saturation model," suggesting that prostate cancer growth is stimulated by even small amounts of androgens (including testosterone), and further increases in T beyond a certain level will not necessarily further increase prostate cancer growth.

  • Some studies have showed a slight reduction in prostate cancer.

Myth #2: TRT Makes Existing Prostate Cancer Worse

  • The Reality: This is more nuanced, and depends.

What the Research Actually Shows:

  • Careful Consideration for Active Prostate Cancer: TRT is generally not recommended for men with active, untreated prostate cancer. There is a theoretical concern that increasing testosterone levels could stimulate the growth of existing cancer cells, but more research is still needed.

  • Individualized Assessment: Each case needs to be examined. This is where a skilled medical professional is key.

Myth #3: All Men Considering TRT Are at High Risk for Prostate Cancer

  • The Reality: The general population of men is very varied.

What the Research Actually Shows:

  • Age: The risk of prostate cancer increases with age.

  • Family History: A family history of prostate cancer increases the risk.

  • Race: African American men have a higher risk of prostate cancer.

  • PSA Levels: Elevated PSA levels can be a sign of prostate cancer, but can also mean something else.

  • Other Factors: Obesity, diet, and certain genetic factors can also influence the risk.

What About PSA Levels? Understanding Prostate-Specific Antigen

PSA (Prostate-Specific Antigen) is a protein produced by the prostate gland. Elevated PSA levels can be a sign of prostate cancer, but they can also be caused by other factors, such as:

  • Benign Prostatic Hyperplasia (BPH): Enlargement of the prostate gland.

  • Prostatitis: Inflammation of the prostate gland.

  • Age: PSA levels tend to increase with age.

  • Certain Medications: Some medications can affect PSA levels.

  • Ejaculation: PSA levels can temporarily increase after ejaculation.

The Importance of Screening and Monitoring

At Essential Woman LLC, we take a comprehensive approach to TRT, including:

  • Thorough Medical History Review: Assessing your individual risk factors for prostate cancer.

  • PSA Testing: Measuring your PSA levels before starting TRT and monitoring them regularly during treatment.

  • Open Communication: We are dedicated to discussing openly all of your concerns.

You can feel safe with Cindy Lombard, WHNP-BC, because you will be checked for any risk factor associated with prostate cancer.
