SUMMER HEAT, EXPOSURE and BENEFITS OF IV HYDRATION
Summer brings sunny days and VERY warm temperatures that can have both enjoyable and challenging effects on our health. One of the significant risks associated with prolonged exposure to summer heat is RAPID DEHYDRATION. Fortunately, intravenous (IV) hydration can offer quick, easy and very effective benefits to managing this condition.
Here’s a quick, yet detailed look at the relationship between summer heat exposure and IV hydration, including how IV fluids can help to improve and/or maintain optimal health.
Effects of Summer Heat on the Body
Increased Sweating: As temperatures rise, the body tries to cool down through sweating. Excessive sweating can lead to the loss of water and essential electrolytes like sodium, potassium, and chloride. Dehydration reduces the ability to sweat to cool your body temp.
Dehydration: If oral fluid intake does not match fluid loss, dehydration can occur. Late symptoms include dry mouth, dizziness, dark urine, and fatigue that can lead to Heat Exhaustion and/or Heat Stroke. Dehydration can progressrapidly to heat exhaustion or heat stroke, conditions that require immediate medical attention. Symptoms include heavy sweating, rapid pulse, nausea, and even confusion and oral hydration may be inadequate, with replacement of electrolytes lacking.
Risk Factors for Dehydration
Physical Activity: Exercising, playing or working outdoors in the heat increases sweat loss and fluid needs as well as social alcohol consumption.
Age: Adults and young children are equally susceptible to dehydration.
Health Conditions: Conditions like diabetes or kidney disease can affect fluid balance and increase dehydration risk.
Medications: Certain medications you may be taking, such as diuretics, can lead to increased fluid loss.
SIMPLE AND EFFECTIVE HYDRATION involves delivering fluids and electrolytes directly into the bloodstream. This method has several advantages over oral hydration:
Rapid Absorption: IV fluids are absorbed quickly into the bloodstream, providing immediate hydration.
Controlled Fluid Balance: Healthcare providers can precisely control the type and amount of fluids administered, ensuring that specific electrolyte imbalances are corrected as well as delivery of essential vitamins and/or minerals for optimal health.
